The Elegance Behind Tea Towels

1 Nov

Tea towels are kind of a fancy name for what we simply call a “dish” towel. A big difference is that tea towels are usually made from linen, while dish towels are mostly made from terry cloth. Linen is gentler on fancier or more delicate dishes. There is also a similarity between tea towels and dish rags; they are both used for cleaning. But dish rags also wipe down counters and you wouldn’t normally use a dish rag on a nicer dish since it could leave scratch marks. Tea towels are not just for nicer dishes, they are also used to cover left over food that is going to be put in the fridge or simply to the side if it is bread. Since tea towels are kept cleaner (for the most part) they are more intended for covering food that we’re going to eat.

Tea towels were meant for fine China and other delicate dishes, but if you don’t even have that in your kitchen they make great towels in general for drying clean dishes. They are the kind of towels meant for getting personalized as a gift for someone’s wedding, baby shower, birthday, Christmas, really anything that someone who is getting their own place needs.

Various shipping container usages

9 Sep

Many people enjoy getting something in the mail, but what should be done with those various shipping container boxes once they’ve been opened?

Large sized containers. These boxes are big enough to ship some cloths, blankets, or two winter coats. For large sized shipping containers, they can be used to store holiday items such as stockings and wreaths, or cards and streamers. Large sized shipping containers can also be used for reshipping items. If there is an item that needs to be sent, save time and money by having a stash of large sized containers on hand. These boxes can also be used to help sort stuff in the home or work place. For example, when clearing out a room or closet for giveaway, mark the boxes as “trash” or “donate” and then pick them up and cart them away.

Or let the kids make something out of them, using scissors and markers and tape help them make a club house, or a fort. They can also be used when a person is moving. Moving can be a big hassle and having to buy new boxes to set up and assemble can be daunting. If there are boxes on hand that are ready to go, it can help save time and stress.

Medium sized boxes can be used for less bulky items. They can be used to store books while wiping down a book shelf. They can keep seldom used toys or games in children’s rooms. They can be used to store all those unseemly magazines. Use Medium boxes to keep DVD’s and games in order.

Small shipping containers can be used for keeping, socks or t-shirt drawers neat and tidy. When used for shipping, they are great for sending baked goods such as treats, and cookies. They make great small care packages. Put in the care package, some nice soaps, a paperback, a few candy bars and how about a few gift cards or a little bit of mad money to help cheer up a homesick college student.
When the college student has the box, they can reuse it to keep their desk clear. Keep club wrist bands. They can keep book marks, or jewelry and make-up in them.

An Office Indoors

5 Dec

In the pre-internet days that some of us remember only too well it was not unheard of for some of us to take work home with them to either sort through on the train journey or during the evening that followed.  This has now been blown up to such an extent that the said train journey may not take place any more and we can work from home everyday of the week.  The era of the Home Office has well and truly arrived.

With the advent of the internet combined with fax machines, laptops and the tremendous email systems now available who needs to commute?   What WAS the phone used for?

So, the theory sounds absolutely brilliant.  No more commuting, no ridiculous early morning alarm calls and perhaps an office looking out on to the garden instead of another twenty storey high office block.  Reality of course is perhaps not so simple.

A home office essentially must be looked on in the same manner as an ordinary office in the city or town.  This is where work has to be done; money has to be earned irrespective of whether you are working from home for just yourself or for others.  There are many things to consider before the first email is sent or the first phone call made.

The major priority is getting the correct location indoors.  Obviously the room you select has to be in a relatively quiet area of the house for the privacy element.  Next to the ‘always in use’ kitchen is not conducive to the concentration you will need to apply.   If there will be clients visiting then the facilities such as a cloakroom should be nearby.  No client will want to walk through toys strewn everywhere or any other congestion just to use the facilities.

Furnishing the office is not as simple as you might think, you could also use a conservatory as an office.  Additional wiring will be necessary and for obvious reasons the phone line has to separate from the normal house phone.  As well as the items already mentioned you will need a desk, chairs, printer, a home computer with a laptop for backup, a waste paper basket and shredder and  perhaps an answering machine.  Ensure your chair is totally comfortable as numerous hours will be spent in it.  This is a most important piece of equipment and you should try and get the best possible chair you can afford.  A piece of equipment which has become popular are home solar panels for an alternative energy source.

As you can see, there are many items to get and prior to buying anything it is a good idea to measure the room and plan well ahead where everything is going to go.
